Switch from Himawari-8 to Himawari-9

NOAA CoastWatch plans to resume production of Himawari-9 Imagery and Derived Products starting on November 26th, 2025. This follows an announcement from Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA), who confirmed a successful technical restoration of the satellite. 

NOAA CoastWatch switched to providing limited Himawari-8 products in early October 2025.  There may be some additional product latency as systems are reconfigured for the Himawari-9 data.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirms the successful technical restoration of the Himawari-9 geostationary meteorological satellite. Its observation data is now being received reliably and without interruption.

JMA plans to transition primary operational duties from Himawari-8 to the restored Himawari-9. Data provision from Himawari-9 is currently scheduled to commence at 05:00 UTC on Tuesday, 26 November 2025.
